Thai Yoga Massage or Nuad Bo-Rarn (sacred touch) is a powerful form of bodywork originating some 2500 bc, which is completely different from western massage. It consists of acupressure on energy lines or sens and a large number of yogic stretching movements. The massage is performed on a futon or other padded floor mat through light clothing. It uses no oils but instead relies on slow, rhythmic movements and pressure using thumbs, palms, feet, knees, elbows and bodyweight to obtain the therapeutic effect. Traditionally there are two forms of Thai Massage - Northern and Southern. Calvin Finn practices a mix of both styles but includes other influences, such as Osteo Thai Yoga. Thai Yoga Massage is given with loving kindness, which reflects the four divine states of mind in Buddhist teaching: loving kindness, compassion, vicarious joy and equanimity.
There are many benefits to Thai Yoga Massage. It can release tension, stress and anxiety, producing deep relaxation, increase energy levels, unblocking the body's natural flow of energy, increase flexibility, range of movement, co-ordination and posture, relieve aches and pains, strengthens internal organs and immune system, and encourages lymph flow and thus removal of waste. It can also promote inner peace, sooth the nervous system, and restore balance and equilibrium.
